Vivian Silva of Nashua displays some of the personalized gift baskets she creates for her business, Baskets by Vivian. Order this picture NASHUA -

Last August, Vivian Silva was laid off from her job as a buyer of materials at a high-tech company. The very next day she was busy registering her own company with the state. "It was one of those situations that shows everything happens for a reason," Silva said. And so, Baskets by Vivian was born. If there is something to celebrate - a wedding, a new baby, buying a new house or getting a first or new apartment - then Silva can make a basket to help mark the event. she began pulling baskets together for friends and family members about eight years ago and it morphed into a hobby over those years. "My sister would give me $40 or $50 and say she needed a baby basket for someone," Silva said. For years, she had been thinking about starting her own business, so by the time she got laid off, she knew what she wanted to do. She designed her own brochures, took the photos for them and designed her own Web site, although she hired someone to do the shopping cart portion of the site. Some of what she does includes finding out enough information about the person destined to get the basket so she can provide a personal touch with its contents. "I like to go that extra mile to make it special, make it personal," Silva said. Once, she prepared a basket for a real-estate agent who would give it to a customer buying a house. It was an older woman from Vietnam and her son and daughter-in-law, Silva said, so she got the customer's last name and started her research. She began researching Asian customs and food, and in the process, found a coffee brand with the same name as the woman's last name. Silva included a number of these items, along with the coffee, and the agent reported that the woman was very moved by the contents. "That's what I really like about what I do," Silva said about the reactions the recipients have upon seeing the customized baskets. She not only shops for the baskets and what goes in them, but makes the bows used for decoration and delivers them. It is a bit of a family affair, since she drafted her grandmother to crochet baby sweaters, booties, hats and afghans as well as twin, full, queen and king afghans. "I like providing people with the opportunity to own handmade items like this," Silva said during an interview as she showed off her grandmother's handiwork. Silva is also a personal shopper for those without the time to run out and get what they need. A woman in Florida recently hired her to go buy a present and deliver it to a baby shower being held in Nashua later this month. Being flexible, such as doing additional tasks for customers, is important, but Silva says forging relationships with other businesses is an important part of growing the business. "I work with the Angus Butcher - I use some of the rubs and marinades he has for my barbecue baskets," she said. Silva leaves her business brochures at the Merrimack butcher shop and puts out the fliers from the meat business when she is at local shows. Silva prepares for these shows in the home office of her Kessler Farm townhouse, where she also puts together the baskets. She keeps a small inventory of baskets, packaging and universal items on hand. "I can put a basket of any type together. I love the challenge of making each one personal," Silva said.
